This months "Successful People You Should Know" is Donna Douglas, owner of Donna Douglas Communications in Barrie ON.
I asked Donna what she thought made her successful?
Pay attention folks! Donna's wisdom is Timeless, this is what she had to say...
"I’ve been self employed since 1978. In those days I had to fly by the seat of my pants, to coin a phrase. There was no help, no advice, not even the words SOHO in anybody’s vocabulary. So it was a bit isolating.
In the 31 years since then, I’ve felt successful many, many times. Usually it involves meeting a goal, pulling myriad parts, people, and activities together and trusting the process to achieve its course.
It I point the way, work towards the way and then get out of the way, I can help people forge a path that is truly theirs.
By using the ups and downs, the depths of failure and the heights of success that my own journey has entailed, I feel I can make it possible for others to do the same, with less pain and greater joy.
I absolutely love working with entrepreneurs!
I love watching the ideas take shape, burble away and then froth into success.
I love knowing that if I believe in other people, they will believe in themselves, too."
Donna offers a number of programs to people who want to chart their own course and take their employment to self employment.
Her half day Business Plan workshop lets you think about your idea as a trip... She takes away the lingo and the fear. This program is offered every other month.
Her Go Venture program brings together 30 potential business owners and involves expert entrepreneurs who lead the way for people to build their own successful businesses. Donna believes that Go Venture is your first, best, business investment! This program starts three times a year and lasts for 10 months.
And her Go Forth program brings together a select group of Go Venture graduates who want to dig deeper and harness their inner resources to actually sustain their businesses past the early years. Go Forth starts once a year and lasts for 5 months.

Welcome to Our June 2009 Imagine Success Newsletter
Since June represents a time when our energy is high, I thought that a few words on "Playing to Your Stengths" was a perfect topic to feature in this months newsletter.
Wouldn't it be great if you could play to your strengths almost everyday. Gee, I think I will sign up for that life right away!
I chose the topic of personal strengths to write about in this newsletter because it is so close to my heart and in essence, is why I do what I do. Defining my own strengths through the years has not always been an easy go of it. One of my strengths is my curious, inquisitive mind. This curious, inquisitive mind almost got me fired from my job when I was 20 years old simply for questioning "why" our unit was doing things the way we were. I just thought we could do it a better way! I remember being "hauled in on the carpet", as they fondly referred to it, to be reprimanded and almost fired for "insubordination".
Honestly, I could not understand why they were so angry when all I was trying to do was find an easier, more efficient and effective way for our unit to perform the duties. For me, understanding the reasoning behind "why" something was done a certain way was second nature, hence my inquisitive mind and one of my strengths. After this experience, I wasn't as vocal about what I was thinking, as I needed the job to survive, so in silence I would wonder why and share with no one in fear that I would loose my job. Does this story sound familiar? I bet to alot of you it does.
Thankfully, I had a strong will and desire to find a better way for myself and eventually that same organization that reprimanded me for "insubordination" ended up paying me very well to ask the question "why" in a "process improvement facilitator" role. I laugh now, but at the time it wasn't all that funny!
I remember back then being so determined to find a career where I would use my curious, inquisitive mind and to really help others do the same. My committment to this was sealed, and today I am fortunate enough to reap the benefits of my resolve and to really have the opportunity to provide others with the information and tools that they need to "Play to Their Strengths" too.
This is what is at the heart and soul of Imagine Success Consulting, offering you, your business or your organization, programs and workshops that will inspire, empower and educate to put you on the path to success!
I encourage you to always focus on your strengths and build on those, because focussing on your weaknesses is just a waste of time and really not effective.
Marcus Buckingham gives us motivation to play to our strengths in this short video. Watch it here, and remember to always find your silver lining! Enjoy!
Each month we will be sending out our Imagine Success Newsletter where we will share an "article of choice" that we have found inspiring, empowering or educating and we will highlight a story of someone that we have met along the way in our "in other news - successful people you should know" section. This month we are featuring Donna Douglas of Donna Douglas Communications, read all about her story just to your left.
And finally we will provide you with upcoming programs and workshops that are available to put you on the path to Success!
Cheers!

This Months Article of Choice is "Rich by Thirty; Your Financial Dream Team"
How choosing the people to handle your money is like deciding who you want to date...
I had a terrible date a few years ago. Dinner was fine, and we went for a nice walk, but the conversation was brutal. He was a sweet guy, but by the end of the evening I knew he wasn’t for me. No big deal. But then as I went to leave he attempted the Goodnight Kiss. I pulled the Swoop-and-Hug. Not getting the hint, he tried again. This time, I took a step backwards and tumbled down his porch steps, plowing through a row of flowerpots, scraping my wrists and ripping my pants wide open. Bleeding, I made a break for the car and didn’t look back. I’d made a decision about who I wanted – or, rather, didn’t want – on my team.
These are the kinds of decisions that reverberate through your life and potentially turn out to be good financial decisions. Teaming up with the right people, asking the right questions, learning what characteristics to look for are as important when building a financial dream team as they are when you’re building a personal relationship. Some people will wait in the wings, only entering your life occasionally. A mortgage broker and realtor, for instance, can assist with the nitty-gritty in real estate contracts and save you money while they’re at it. Others should be front and centre. Like creating the lineup for an all-star basketball team, here are a few positions you’ll want to have on your side:
Your Michael Jordan: Your top draft pick is an investment advisor, or shooting guard, to help you focus on building a realistic financial plan based on growing your long-term net worth. Make sure they have a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. As with any financial expert, always get a referral from someone you trust and then interview a few, to one, see if you like them and two, figure out if they’re being honest and realistic. Ask each candidate to prepare a proposal of a financial plan. This will help you select the advisor most aligned with your goals and you can instantly tell who was listening.
Your Steve Nash: An insurance agent (a.k.a. the point guard), whether it’s a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) or Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), can advise you on protecting your assets and family if something such as property damage, illness or death derails your plans. A good agent will direct you towards insuring big things (life, home, loan and auto), not small things, and help you buy the right insurance. Ask candidates to prepare a proposal to address your needs. One more thing: Many investment advisors and insurance agents work on commission; a good one will always be upfront about costs and benefits.
Your LeBron James: A small forward or accountant focuses on tax aversion (though not the highly illegal tax evasion), helping you structure your finances to avoid paying unnecessary dollars. Their role is to advise you on how manage your net worth growth in the most tax-efficient way possible, along with ensuring you pay the right amount of tax – not too much or too little. Meet with your CA at least once a year to review how your finances are structured.
Your Wilt Chamberlin: Hopefully, you won’t need their services of a lawyer, your center, often, but a lawyer is critical when you need to do fun things like buy a house, create a will, handle estates or make property transactions. Accountants and lawyers both charge by the hour, so make sure you’re organized before your appointments to make meetings more efficient.
Your Tim Duncan: The last person is your romantic partner, a kind of power forward. Do not pass go until you’ve discussed your views on debts, investments, spending, budgets, family, lifestyle expectations and goals. Try the “who, what, where, when, why and how” approach: Do you have a budget? Who taught you how to budget? What are your budget priorities? Do you budget for the unexpected? When do you evaluate your budget? How successful are you at sticking to it? Unlike “dating” your financial advisors, these heady topics are best discussed over a bottle of good wine.
